Nobody likes to fail but it happens to everyone sometime. Failure doesn’t define us so much as how we deal with the failure. Like most people I have had my share, but one in particular stands out in my mind.

I was selected to represent my school in a spelling bee when I was in 5th grade. It was a proud moment for me. To be selected I had to compete against sixth graders. I was walking on air when I out-spelled my last competitor. However I didn’t take my responsibility lightly. With the reputation of the school riding on my shoulders, I practiced my spelling daily. I drove my family crazy making them give me words to spell. But it worked. I was in a spelling zone. No word was too long or too esoteric for me.

The big day came. It was somewhat of an event. Spellers wore ties or dresses. The event was in an auditorium and parents had come, as mine did, to see their darling offspring spell their hearts out. I believe I may have been a little smug as I listened to others. Baby words.

My name was called and brimming with confidence I approached center stage and was given my first word. “Antagonize”. An easy one. “A-n-t-i-d-i-s-e-s-t-a-b-l-i-s-h-m-e-n-t-a-r-i-a-n-i-s-m. Antidisestablishmentarianism” I was horrified. I already knew when I hit the first “i” that it was wrong. But for some reason I kept going. It was silent and I could feel my face flush while everybody stared. “Z-y-z-z-y-v-a, zyzzyva.” The words and spelling just kept rolling off my tongue. Zythepsary, Xylariaceae and a few others. It seemed like hours, but in a couple of minutes I had been escorted off stage.

It was a quiet ride home and I ran to my room as soon as we got there. My parents gave me a couple of hours to myself and came in to speak to me. Dad looked at me a moment all serious and his face was getting red like he does when he’s mad. And busted out laughing. And didn’t stop.

I don’t know if anything else would have worked. My dad aka “Stone-face” in hysterics. I still had to take plenty of teasing at school. Guys I know still spell at me. However it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. And if I am intimidated or worried about something I spell “antidisestablishmentarianism” and don’t worry about it.
