“Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?”

Use these tips when you write your UCLA essay prompt response

  • Use specific examples to illustrate your ideas. Don’t just say that you are determined. Provide an example of how you demonstrated your determination.
  • Show what you learned or gained from your experience. What did the experience mean do you and how have you grown and matured from it.
  • Use good organization when writing your essay. Make sure your essay has a logical structure. Introduction, two or 3 paragraphs each with a point you want to make and a conclusion. Will it make sense if somebody who doesn’t know you reads the essay? Provide context.
  • Consider the information you have already provided on the application. Also think about how you will answer the other essay prompt? Plan your UCLA statement of purpose based on what additional information you want to provide that hasn’t been already. Decide which prompt will be more effective for which information.
  • Revise/allow plenty of time. Time and revision go together. Start your essay early. Let it sit a day or two and read it. Does it do what you want it to? Is there a way to say what you did better? Make improvements and let it sit a day or two more and repeat. Don’t hesitate to get feedback from others.

The following is an example of a UCLA personal statement:

Blocking out everything I focused only on the bar. I saw myself clearing the height. I was already jumping higher than I ever had. Holding nothing back I made my approach an it was just like I pictured it. I didn’t just beat my personal record. I crushed it and the meet was mine. My coach urged me to stop there and I could have. But I always strive for more. Just like last time. I could visualize myself clearing my final attempt. I took a couple of steps and my right ankle just seemed to fold. In minutes it had tripled in size.

I had one week to recover. My best efforts went towards improving the condition of my ankle. Despite all my efforts the next week I was still limping badly. There was no way I could have competed even if my coach had let me. I was disappointed even though the outcome could not have been any different. Not taking that last jump would have always eaten at me and I would have always wondered if I would have done better. It was that drive that got me first place on my second jump at a height well above what I had ever cleared.

My coach later took it well. He must have been tempted to chew me out for not listening. He was normally a stickler for that. I think he understood. Everything was there; I just had to have the determination to make it happen. Despite my curtailed track season, my hard work and practice throughout the year produced results that exhibited nothing less than my best efforts. I continue to undertake everyday challenges with the same mind-set and do everything in my power to reach my goals.
